You may remember a famous musical called “The Sound of Music”:

/
/

/
/It’s about a nun-in-training who becomes a nanny for a large family, teaches them to sing and restores their happiness. It also concerns the geopolitical events involving Austria and Germany on the eve of World War II. The musical features a song about a common Austrian flower. Both the song and the flower are called “Edelweiss”. (I used to think that “Edelweiss” was actually the Austrian national anthem. Turns out it’s just some song they wrote for the musical)

Edelweiss

/
/None of this has anything whatsoever to do with Japan.
/
/
/
/And yet, in my neighborhood, every single day at exactly 5:30PM, “Edelweiss” plays over a loudspeaker.
/
/

/
/I have no idea why this is.
/
/
/
/Though recently I saw this:
/
/

/
/That’s probably unrelated, but I felt like pointing it out.
/
/
/
/I’ve also been told that that there are different songs (one was from Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast”) for different locations, and some locations have a song in the morning too (possibly that includes my own location; I don’t know, I’m never awake at that time). I’ve furthermore been told that the songs change every semester. But I still don’t know why they play random songs in the first place. (Not that I’m complaining or anything.)

Just found out while doing some research for a project that the Edelweiss is a symbol of courage and power in Japanese Flower Culture (Hanakotoba)./
